We all have a set of rules we follow in the back of our minds. I am the kind of person that would never do this and always do that. I have been trying with some success to add to those rules in order to improve my health and well-being. I added the “Just One Thing” rule and each day I have just one fitness goal to accomplish. Usually that goal is to get up at the usual time and get out the door to the gym. If I work on that rule long enough it becomes habit and part of how I define myself. I find I can’t work on too many rules at one time or on a rule that is too complex.
I also have a rule that I do not miss sessions with my trainer. I have been very successful with that one although I think about cancelling often.
For a while I was very successful with thinking I was the kind of person that does not eat sweets. There really isn’t anything there in the sweets for me. If I thought about sweets I would think about it tasting much like corn syrup which I am not a fan of. I do eat the occasional chocolate or sweet now but not like I used to. I find it much more manageable now.
Well my get out the door to the gym “Just One Thing” rule needs some help. My job and lack of sleep are getting in the way. Also my bed in the morning is really nice and warm. So I am going to add to my rule and beef it up a little. No missing the gym on Mondays. That is the first day of my week and I am a Monday morning moaner so if I start the week on the right track, it should be easier to keep up the momentum.
On a side note; Charlotte at The Great Fitness Experiment wrote on her blog today that “Not every workout is going to be great – most of them aren’t which is why the great ones are so notable!” Well I wish I had heard that before. The number of times my trainer and friends have had to listen to me complain because I wasn’t happy with my performance. My trainer always tells me that any day that I show up to exercise is a success even if I don’t accomplish a lot, but I want to be great every day and I guess I assume everybody else is managing it so why can’t I. I have a rule about that of course which is that I have to go for a walk later in the day if I am not happy with my behavior on a particular day. The walk is not punishment it is just a way to make me feel I have done something to balance out the day.
So in conclusion, NEVER MISS MONDAY WORKOUTS! Luckily it is Wednesday so I don’t have to prove myself right away. Don’t worry! I have the trainer tomorrow and I never miss the trainer!
