I have been tired the last few months and it has been hard to put a good effort into my workouts. Quite frankly I have been just coming in and hoping the energy is there or it will show up at some point. There is no mystery about why I am messed up. My sleep pattern is off and I am trying to lose weight and therefore am eating fewer calories. In the past I have often felt more energized with fewer calories actually I have often felt that way with less sleep. Yep I know I’m weird! So what can I do to recharge and become more alert right now this minute so that I can put in a good showing?
When is a Calorie not a Calorie? When you use the Atwater general factor system to determine how many calories are in a food product. This is the most common method of determining calories. Scientists at the USDA theorized that this method of measurement might not be representative for certain food groups such as nuts. So how is Atwater factor flawed? Well it ignores the fact that some of the calories in a food may pass through a human as waste. DOH!!
Chris Kresser is a blogger acupuncturist and follower of Eastern Spirituality and medicine. He has written a five part series of article about digestive health (Click here for article). I have suffered from severe heartburn for about 3 years. It took a while but I was finally diagnosed with a hiatus hernia this year. When I read Chris Kresser’s article I became very angry. He says that if it was true that heart burn was caused by too much acid in your stomach then teenagers would have terrible heartburn as they have the most acid. Once people get past middle age their acid production is reduced. He says that the reason people get heartburn is because of this reduced production of acid. Food is not digested as quickly and there is a build up of pressure in the stomach forcing acid up into the esophagus causing heartburn. He says that many heartburn treatments will give relief at first by reducing acid but they suppress future acid production making the problem worse long term and making the patient dependent on medicine on a daily basis. He says that is big pharma’s plan. Keeping customers dependent on their product. This all sounds … Continue reading

USA News rated 25 diets using a panel of 22 health experts including nutritionists and specialists in diabetes, heart health, human behavior, and weight loss. I checked into he experts and they look legit. I was surprised at the results of the evaluation. The Paleo diet came in dead last. Atkins didn’t do very well either. They were downgraded mostly for being hard to follow and although you may get short term results they didn’t work as well long term. I see a lot of people that have been on the Paleo diet for a while and love it so that surprised me. You know what diet did well that surprised me. SLIMFAST!!!!! Ok I guess it is easy but isn’t that just eating chemicals? You can’t live on that stuff can you? Jenny Craig did very well and Nutrisystem did OK. I assumed they would be equal and again to much fake food. Anyway check it out for yourself. Moanday instead of Monday Ha!! That was an accident but it is so true. My mother was kind enough to pick out my spelling and grammar mistakes on the site this weekend so I could correct them. I wonder what she will make of this. I blame my spelling problems on the fact that I can never find my reading glasses so I am just guessing what is actually getting written on this page. So on MOANdays I am going to try to make a habit of posting links to interesting articles on the web. A friend is having some weight loss success after years of amazing discipline with little result using this web site http://www.myfitnesspal.com/ She has been able to increase her calories and still lose weight. She is similar to many older woman in that her metabolism has slowed down and she has a persistent 20 Lbs stuck on her tummy and hips. There is an interesting series on HBO called The Weight of The Nation about obesity. I know you don’t get HBO. Not a problem you can watch the series on-line even up here in Canada at http://theweightofthenation.hbo.com/ Here is an article Pam from www.FatGirls4Fitness.com sent me on the … Continue reading
Food is my kryptonite. My relationship with food is complex and dysfunctional. It has been that way most of my life. I have messed around with food for so many years that I have no sense of hunger nor do I recall ever having that feeling. Now that I have a hernia my stomach will let me know it has been too long since I have eaten by giving me heartburn. I do get very persistent cravings which can last for many hours regardless of what I eat or do not eat. I am often almost paralyzed in my inability to select food that will satisfy my needs. This is because simple nutrition is not the only need that food meets.
Uhhhhhh! Woof, Woof, Woof! Breath! OK. Today I’m going to talk about the thing that scares me. But first I’ll talk around the edges of the topic. Then I’ll hint at the topic and run away to some other slightly related story. Then maybe I’ll pull off the scab and say it. People say I am brave for actually putting my real weight on this web site and putting up a picture of myself in a swimsuit. That is nothing! Here it is my personal kryptonite. I am a binge eater! Wow! I am shaky! I usually avoid talking about food because I have so much anxiety about it. I’m sure anybody that has had a weight problem can relate to this.
